The concept of a "ladder character" is nothing new for Diablo. But what happens when players run out of things to grind for? Seasons. Players level their character up to the max, continually battle against endgame enemies to find new gear and then battle against even stronger endgame content. But how did it keep them? Season of The Grindĭiablo III is a game of grinding. Plus, it finally gave the game an endgame in the form of "Adventure Mode." With the exception of PvP, Diablo III was finally a complete game with plenty for new and returning players to do. The expansion brought with it an even darker and more rewarding continuation of Diablo III's main quest. This update made many adjustments and fixed a lot of issues, but right after it released came Diablo III's expansion: Reaper of Souls. It made the items drop dynamically based on what your current character needs, and it made Legendary drops actually worth picking up with affixes and unique modifiers.

They were losing players and facing criticism from the online community. But instead of slowly trickling out fixes and content drops to gradually bring the game to where it should have been at launch, Blizzard went all in with two strong moves. Add to this a lack of PvP and virtually no endgame content, and it looked like Diablo III was dead on arrival. Despite an interesting story, and all the cosmetic bells and whistles that come with a Blizzard game, Diablo III launched as a game filled with more trouble than it was worth. Of course, it was destined to crash, and players hated the way Diablo III was centered around the auction house. Diablo III launched with a clear focus on a feature new to the series: a real money auction house. So when Diablo III launched, the hype for it was massive, rivaling the biggest games in other genres.Ī lot changed for Blizzard between Diablo II and III due to the massive success of World of Warcraft. Some of these changes influenced Diablo III, and players were surprised by what they received at launch. Diablo II, and its expansion Lord Of Destruction, were widely seen as some of the greatest PC experiences of all time. Its dark, gothic storytelling with fantastical and (more often than not) gory visuals were unmatched at the time.
